Robert and Ana Maria Gomez walking 1200 kms from Alicante to Cape Finisterre along the Camino del Sureste.
PERSONAL PROFILE
Robert and Ana Maria
In our younger days we were both very sporty. Ana Maria achieved international status representing Argentina at Basketball while I reached more modest levels in rowing and field hockey.
We started long distance walking in 2007 following a bad car crash which required two and a half years of physiotherapy. Part of the therapy was walking and we soon got tired of short monotonous walks. From doing 100 miles which at the time seemed almost impossible to do, we advanced to a 1000 mile trek from Gibraltar to La Coruña in 2010.
This year we are going to attempt an 800 mile walk from Alicante to Cape Finisterre. It is going to be the most difficult for us to date for a variety of reasons, including the fact that we are five years older than when we did that epic walk! We should point out that there is nothing very remarkable about us walking these distances. There are many older than us who walk even longer distances. We are not in competition with them. For us these walks simply take us to the very limits of what we can achieve and we enjoy the personal challenge.
During the walk we will be remembering many of our family and friends who are no longer with us, including my father, mother and brother who all died 15 years ago and Ana Maria's father who died 25 years ago.
But most of all we will be thinking of our three gorgeous grandsons, Hal, Austin and Magnus. We hope that one day they will look back at this endeavour and realise that no matter what obstacles life puts in your way, all things are possible.
